Roccasecca stands on a hill on the slopes of Monte Asprano, overlooking the Liri Valley. The modern town is divided into four villages: Castello, Centro, Caprile and Roccasecca Scalo. In the Castle of the Counts of Aquino, built to defend the abbey of Montecassino, the philosopher and theologian Saint Thomas was born in 1224.

It’s a cycling route that connects the Ponte delle Valli, along the Tracciolino road (Roccasecca), with the archaeological site of ancient Casinum (Cassino) with a length of about 26 kilometres, crossing the places that in 1944 were the scene of the main war events along the Gustav Line.

In the territory of Castrocielo there is a small lake formed by the Capo d'Acqua spring, which in ancient times fed a system of lakes (now dried up) known as the 'Forme d'Aquino', which were placed in defence of the Roman city of Aquinum.

A small medieval fortress, protecting the abbey and the village below, which today hosts events and concerts, and from which you can admire one of the most evocative views of the Liri Valley.

The archaeological site of ancient Casinum extends along the road leading to the abbey of Montecassino and is also home to the 'G. Carettoni' National Archaeological Museum, in which the most significant finds of the area, from Prehistory to Roman times, are exhibited.
